Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions clients often ask about Reiki and what to expect during a session. If your question isn’t here, feel free to reach out – I’m happy to help.

What is Reiki? How does it work?

Reiki is an energy healing practice developed in the early 1900s by Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk. It works by channeling universal life-force energy – the energy present in all living things – to support the highest good of the person receiving it. Reiki helps to restore balance, promote relaxation, and encourage the body, mind, and spirit to harmonise naturally.

Is Reiki safe?

Yes, Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive, and completely safe energy healing practice. It can be received by people of all ages and complements other therapies without any harmful side effects.

Do I need to believe in Reiki for it to work?

No belief is necessary for Reiki to be effective. Reiki works with the energy of the body, which responds regardless of whether you consciously believe in it. Simply being open to receiving the healing energy is enough, and many people notice its effects even on a subconscious level.

Is Reiki really backed by research?

Reiki is a complementary therapy, and while research is still growing, peer-reviewed studies show meaningful benefits. Reiki has been found to reduce anxiety, pain, and fatigue, improve mood and quality of life, and support overall well-being. Large trials and meta-analyses indicate that both short and longer sessions can be effective, and Reiki has measurable physiological effects, such as activating the parasympathetic nervous system. While it’s not a replacement for medical care, research suggests Reiki can provide safe and supportive mind–body benefits alongside conventional treatments.

Is Reiki a replacement for medical care?

No, Reiki is not a replacement for medical treatment. It is a supportive, complementary therapy designed to work alongside conventional healthcare. Reiki can help reduce stress, promote relaxation, and encourage balance in the body, mind, and spirit, but it should never be used instead of professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always consult your healthcare provider for any medical concerns.

How often should I receive Reiki?

The frequency of Reiki sessions depends on your individual needs and goals. Some people benefit from weekly sessions, while others find monthly or occasional sessions enough to maintain balance and relaxation. Studies suggest that both short-term and moderate-frequency Reiki treatments can be effective for reducing anxiety, supporting well-being, and enhancing overall quality of life. If you’re new to Reiki, starting with a few sessions close together can help you feel the full effects. I can also help guide you on a schedule that’s right for you.

How long are session? Which length should I book?

I offer 30-minute and 1-hour sessions. I recommend choosing a 1-hour session if this is your first time experiencing Reiki, as it can take a little time to fully relax and let go. This way, you’ll receive the most benefit from your session.

1. We’ll start by reviewing your Client Intake Form together and discuss anything you’d like to share.
2. You’ll lie down comfortably on the bed and relax – covers on or off, whatever feels best.
3. I’ll light some incense, cleanse our energy, and set a peaceful intention with a short prayer.
4. The Reiki session begins – simply rest and receive the energy as it flows.
5. Towards the end, I’ll gently guide your awareness back to the present moment.
6. After the session, we can talk about any experiences or insights that came up, if you’d like.
7. You’ll leave feeling relaxed – allow yourself to take the rest of the day gently.

Do I need to do anything special before or after my session?

No preparation is needed, just come as you are. I do kindly ask that, if possible, you avoid wearing strong perfumes or scented products so the space stays calm and comfortable.
To get the most from your session, be gentle with yourself: allow whatever sensations arise without worry, and give yourself time to rest and integrate afterwards. Drinking water before and after your session can help your body stay nourished and support the healing process.

What can I expect to feel after a session?

Reiki affects everyone differently, and there is no right or wrong way to feel. Some people experience physical sensations such as stomach upset, nausea, or diarrhoea, which may be signs of the body releasing stagnant or “negative” energy. Others notice fatigue, flu-like symptoms, emotional release, or bursts of energy. Many people feel deeply relaxed, calm, and balanced, while others experience clarity or shifts in mood over several hours or days. Trust your experience and allow yourself to simply receive the session in whatever way feels right for you.
